I want to create a shortcut back to the desktop, to use in the sytem tray next to the start button. Righting clicking on the desk top and choosing New, then Shortcut, brings up a box (using windows xp), allowing me to browse, and I chose Desktop, click next and then finish and there is my new shortcut, however when I click the new shortcut the desktop opens as web page complete with address bar etc. How do I make it so that I go back to the actual desktop ie the one with the background wallpaper when I click this shortcut? Thanks

There is already a shortcut to the desktop in the quick launch toolbar. Right click on the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop and choose Toolbars>quick launch. There'll be a small icon called show desktop on it. You can get rid of the other icons if you don't want them.

j2 can create the file and drop it in the quicklaunch bar but it doesn't do anything when I click on it. roomby appear to have "lost/delated" original icon and created another from the desktop, this is the one in the quicklaunch bar now, but when I open it it opens as a web page.

Have managed to do it, used the link provided by j2 but was typing command in one line, should have been 5 lines. Thanks to both of you.
Holding the Windows key and D should bring up your desktop. Useless if you don't have a windows key (say, on a laptop) but indispensible if you do :-)
Well thanks to roomby and lisaj, I have learnt two new things today (I wondered where the quick launch went to).
thanks to lisaj i learned something too!
you're welcome: I only found out about it about 18 months ago and was shocked: I've been in the industry far too long to not know something so brilliantly useful :-)
