Text messages from own phone!

Hi. I am posting this on behalf of my neighbour who's daughter has been getting some weird text messages but the sender's number is her own phone number that she is receiving these texts from! They are saying weird things like "I am close by" "I can see you etc" she is only young and is getting a bit scared by these esp as they are saying it is from her phone.
Obviously someone has gotten hold of her number (her cousins phone was stolen with her number stored on it a few weeks ago and it is suspected that one or all of his so called friends have taken it) but how can they make it show that it is coming from her own phone? Is it possible? Not sure how these new phones work these days. Thank you for any help that i can pass on to her :o)
