Editing music files

I'm trying to edit a downloaded music file (I'm writing a village quiz and want to do an 'intros' music round). I've tried hunting round Windows Media Player and RealPlayer and can only find ways of editing the title etc. Is there a way to actually edit the music track (in this case, chop of the last 3 minutes or so) using either of the above, or is there a bit of free/shareware I can download to do it?

goldwave or audacity or even cooledit 97 are all freeware, the first two are easy to use, probly audacity best for what u want.

Is the latest version of Goldwave freeware? On my version (5.06) it came up with an annoying message that said I can only do 150 operations before it automatcially exits. There was a time when it was freeware, though. I think one of the older versions, maybe.

not true freeware squirrel but close; save your work after about 100 operations, close goldwave 'n reload 'n re-open your file.. then your good for another 100. that's about as free as it gets.

Thanks for the tip xyzzy. I've downloaded both goldwave and audacity, but both tell me I've got to get a Lame MP3 encoder, so I'm now off hunting for that!
