Wireless Router problem

Hi

I have recently purchased a laptop and hoped to use my virgin media broadband for this via a router.

I can't get the router to connect to the internet, the problem is I think that my modem only works with a usb connection to my pc.

The router uses ethernet connection but when I brought an ethernet lead my pc couldn't connect to the internet (when used normally without router).

Do I need a new modem or can I purchase a router that works with a usb connection?

I hope this makes sense I'm a bit of a novice to all things technical.

Thank you

Please clarify:

Is your Virgin broadband cable or ADSL?

What router have you bought?

You are trying to connect a desktop to the router but the desktop doesn't have an ethernet port?

Windows XP or Vista?

Hi

Sorry I don't know how to reply to your reply properly!

I have cable broadband, I use windows xp.

Although my moden has an ethernet connection, this does not appear to work when I attach it to my pc. My modem attaches to my pc with a usb cable and this works.

I bought a belkin router which only has an ethernet connection.

I hope this helps Ethel and thanks for your speedy reply.

sorry for the questions, but it's the only way.

Have you tried connecting the router to the modem by ethernet, and the laptop to the router by ethernet?

If not, please try and see if it works.

I am assuming you have a desktop pc and a laptop.

I haven't tried that, I was basically just setting up the router using the software provided. On my desktop pc as this is the one that has the internet connection.

Please try installing it on your laptop.
