Is it normal for my D-Link cable router to frequently crash? Making it necessary for me to switch it off, remove the plug and then after a few minutes, replace the plug and switch it back on again, before I can connect to the internet.

No.

Does this happen if you connect directly to the cable modem?

Yes Ethel my main desktop computer is cabled up to my router, and also cabled up to my modem, and it still freezes, just the same as my free standing laptop does.
It seems the problem is not with your router then.

Have you tried switching everything off at the mains - and switching back on in proper order after at least two minutes:

Modem - wait a minute or two

Router - wait.....

Pc and laptop

That can 'reset' everything. I have to do it a couple of times a year, but why, I have no idea.

Otherwise, contact your ISP and see if everything is alright their end.
And have a look at the Virgin status page - it tells you of any service problems that may affect you
