BT phone connection

I have recently started renting a flat and had to re-connect the BT line. They had to rewire some of the sockets to make it work and was given a new phone number. I am now looking at getting broadband but I can not get one yet as it the other companies are saying that I have already got broadband on my phone line. How ever this is a new number and they had to reconnect this line. I'm trying to connect BT now but am on hold. Was just wondering if anyone else has had problems like this?
