The tv in our bedroom has doesn't connect to an extenal ariel just a plug in one that sits on the top instead. Would a frreeview box work or does in need a proper ariel?

It depends how strong the freeview signal is to your house.

Some people get an excellent signal with an indoor portable ariel, others can't get it with a huge digital arial.
It depends on what sort of area youre in i guess. Before I moved house I used my freeview box with an indoor ariel and could get every channel all with strong signals. When I moved to where I live now the indoor ariel wouldnt pick any channels up, and my external one doesnt get them all but does get most of them,

I would say you need a proper aerial that is correctly aligned in order to pick up the strongest signal. the change in reception/clour/sound will be phenominal.
