opening photo`s

having sent photo`s to laptop(dell) o/s vista if i want to open up each pic i have to choose from a list which program i want to open pic with..set the default to window gallery but still have to do this when trying to look at photo..and even in my folder it doesn`t show a thumbnail of pics??? any ideas :)
