A question in this section recently mentioned the need for a good upload speed for hosting online games using an Xbox. How do I find out what my upload speed is, so I can determine whether I can do this before I shell out on a console? I have blueyonder broadband 750, with one pc attached.
I guess you have ADSL broadband. ADSL is asymmetric digital subscriber line. It is asymmetric as the download bandwidth is higher than the upload bandwidth. Typically, a 512 KB download will have a 128 KB upload ie about a quater of the bandwidth. You can buy symmetric digital subscriber lines but they are more expensive. Dial-up and cable internet connections are also usually asymmetric. Obviously, if you upgrade your download bandwidth it will upgrade your upload bandwidth.
go to http://www.pcpitstop.com there you can find your security faults, upload speeds and download speeds. you may test anonomously if you do not want to give them any personal info.
oh and on the top left of the web page click on full test, then click the new member key. if you have norton security you may need to disable it so they can test your puter.
The normal upload speed for 512K ADSL is actually 256K.
Telewest broadband is cable. You can find out more about your connection and its settings etc at the ISP's site.
However, I beleive 750K has 128K upload. Which works out at about 14K ish.
Why should you care what upload you have: other people will suffer, not you. If you are hosting then you have a ping of 0 while everyone else is through the roof! That's what I call an unfair advantage Te He
