If you are looking for a part-time shop job, then you should go into every shop you are interested in working in and ask for the manager. There is no harm or shame in being bolshy and just saying you are interested in working for them, the worst that can happen is that they say 'no'. Some might like you or your approach on the spot and offer a job, rather than going through the paperwork route first.
The more shops you try the easier it will become, so get out there and get talking to the people who might employ you. Good luck
Join the Armed Forces. The RAF would be good choice as you can make good use of your IT skills and its a good way of life with little danger. The benefits are generally better than you can get anywhere else; minimum of six weeks holiday a year plus all bank holidays and usually all weekends, you get to see the world doing your job, you can even get cheap/free air travel when on holiday, military discount at hundreds of places, guaranteed pay rise every year your in, the list is almost endless. Don't be put off by what you think you know about it. You just need to go and find out.
