My laptop seems to have been infected with a malware program called 'Antivirus XP' trying to persuade me to purchase an anti virus program which I do not require. This appears to be quite a clever little bug, as it is blocking me from using both my AVG antivirus program and also Malwarebytes. - Any suggestions on how I might clear the **!*!!* thing.
Many thanks

I helped a friend with this the other week, you need access to another PC to download a registry fix as the malware triggers on every start of an exe file hence stopping your Malware bytes. You need to follow the instructions at http://www.bleepingco...-antivirus-vista-2010 we did this and he was clear of the problem in 20 minutes

Thanks Fitzer! Just one more stupid question though. - I know how to transfer my files to a memory stick, but how do I go about transfering a whole downloaded program?
Same way really, when you click on the link on the website it should ask you where you want to save it, just point it to your memory stick, then when you've plugged that into the infected computer you should just copy the prog to the desktop and then follow the instructions from the website

Thank you again for all your help! I've got it all done anf dusted.now. No more hair tearing.
I just wanted to add slightly different removal advice, though removal instructions at bleepingcomputer.com are also good. Also, you can use other malware removal tools, not just Malwarebytes. You can choose from SUPERAntispyware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Doctor or Combofix. All programs are free.

1. Click Start->Run (or WinKey+R). Input: "command". Press Enter or click OK.
2. Type "notepad" as shown in the image below and press Enter. Notepad will open.
3. Copy and past the following text into Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe\she
ll\open\command]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile\
shell\open\command]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]

4. Save file as "exefix.reg" (without quotation-marks) to your Desktop.
NOTE: choose Save as type: All files
5. Double-click to open exefix.reg. Click "Yes" for Registry Editor prompt window. Then download malware removal tool and run a full system scan.
