Has anyone had this happen to them. You are in a deep sleep, suddenly you hear the phone ring which wakes you up but its not ringing, its in your head. Or you hear someone you know (like your partner) calling you (not someone dead !) and you wake up, but no-one is there. Is there an explanation for this ?

Very offen smurfchops. I just accept it as natural, much as dreams are natural. You are still sane!! ;o)
I often find that if my phone rings while I'm asleep it becomes part of my dream.
It is called sleep paralysis. There is nothing wrong and it is normal.

It 'can' be pretty frightening/disconcerting when it happens. I find that when it does happen it happens for a few weeks then vanishes again.

No its not tinnitus. It's a clear, loud ring of the phone, just once - enough to make me wide awake ! I even press 141 to make sure. And I heard my Other Half calling me when he was away from home (perhaps he was missing me ..)
O I waken with a loud bang as well Prudie and am convinced someone is hammering on the door or the window.

Wolf -ive had sleep paralysis but this is different as i actually waken up and go and investigate.

umm -ive had the phone ringing thing as well its mad then when I realise its the phone its been known for me to attempt to answer the remote control lol

Is sleep paralysis when you are asleep, hear things and can't wake up ?
Bits of you are asleep and bits are awake. It is a inbetween stage.
I have even answered the door bell whilst reading a book, to find nobody there. Got back to the back and read, 'The doorbell rang', or similar.
I often wake up because I've heard somebody call me, or the phone ring, or the bell ring. It's just part of a vivid dream, like waking up screaming and sweating from a nightmare.
I suffer from tinnitus, but this is something different - I've experienced the telephone and doorbell manifestations myself - it is discomforting.
agree sleep paralysis. 2 different types really 1st being you wake up and your whole body can be paralysed or other being where your body has woken up but your brain hasnt so you can be moving but still seeing or hearing things that arent there. I have had fights with octopus and had ladybirds the size of saucepans in my bed. Quite scary at time but pretty funny after
I am so glad to read about sleep paralysis, altho' this is slightly different. I've been having pains in my knees over the last couple of weeks (ok now tho'), but I still keep dreaming that I can't walk. I try & try, but just can't lift my legs at all. They are very disconcerting dreams, which dampen my mood on waking!
It may be because I've been doing a lot of swimming & walking lately....
I have heard people call my name (Phil) when i sometimes have a nap. It is not usually anyone i know......but like i said i firmly beleive in things that are not of the norm after my NDE a few years ago.
i get that all the time too....in between deep sleep and waking. i also get a horrible sensation of seeing big spiders crawl down the wall by my bed when waking, particularly if i am tired. freaks me right out x
What's NDE Garmard?
Near Death experience
I have some very vivid dreams which can sometimes take a while for me to distinguish between them and reality.

I had a period of dreaming or imagining I was somewhere I wasn't supposed to be and physically trying to find my way out even though I was never where I was dreaming, or, that I hadn't done something.

My dad found me downstairs in the kitchen once after one episode when I had been convinced I hadn't shut the hamster's cage door even though it wasn't the case.

Was all very wierd and random.
Oh, of course! Some say that is quite a 'nice peaceful' experience - was it for you, or was it frightening?
