Broadband Connection Problem

When I switch on my computer, my first effort to connect to my ISP always fails.  The box tells me there is no line and to check for problems.  I then find that if I switch the computer off and start again, the connection is successful!  Has anyone any thoughts as to why this is happening and any ideas for a solution.  It's not the end of the world but it is very irritating!

Try installing your modem drivers again, if all else fails get in touch with your ISP for a replacement modem!
I was just going to post the same. Our daughter's PC kept doing this & NTL said that it must have 'dropped' the driver.

Agree with above. Are you always keeping the Broadband router/modem powered on or are you turning that on at the same time as the PC ?

Is your Broadband cable or ADSL (via telephone socket) ?

Do you get any error message when the first connection attempt fails ?

Billynomates - I'm not very up on the jargon but ....

I keep broadband running all the time the computer is switched on - most of the day.  It is ADSL.  If for some reason I disconnect but leave the computer on, there is no problem re-connecting.  The only fail message I get is in the connection box - nothing else comes onto the screen to say there is a problem.  Password etc. are all acceptable.  It is only when I initially start up the computer i.e. first thing in the morning, and then the connection always fails. A re-start is the only solution I have found.  When WIZARD and SMUDGE suggest re-installing, do they mean that I uninstall the whole thing and begin again with the Wanadoo Disc?

There are referring to the software on the PC which runs the modem (box between the PC and the phone line).

I am assuming Wanadoo sent you the pack and you installed it l so you're happy running through the installation disc again ? The first part should take you installing the modem drivers but you shouldn't have to reinstall all the Wanadoo software again.

Try that and then as has been suggested, brave Wanadoo Tech Support to have the modem replaced and line checked.

I think this is a 'feature' of ADSL with some systems. I had the same with BT ADSL years ago. I just used to boot up with the modem/router disconnected then plug it in - not convenient though. Ended up buying a better modem and problem solved.

Let us know how you get on.

PS. What are the lights on the modem doing when it fails to connect ?

Both on steady green!  I'll gird up my loins and have a go tomorrow!  Thanks so much for your help.
Depending whether your modem is connected by USB or Ethernet, either one or the other should be solid green, along with 'SYNC' & 'RDY'.
