RAM
4 Answers
Have been looking to upgrading the ram on my laptop. Whilst searching on the internet I find the prices vary considerably for 1GB, from about £10 to £30. Does anyone know if it is far better to buy the more expensive or is it ok to go for the cheaper option, as long as it is new ram not reused. I'm a bit of a novice regarding this. Don't want to damage the laptop with dodgy ram.

In my opinion you get what you pay for. I tend to go for ram from either Crucial, Corsair or Kingston. Generally, buying from a good manufacturer means you get a 'lifetime guarantee' against failure in normal use.
I'm possibly biased because my pc's tend to be used as gaming machines and I buy top end ram for it.

If you do buy a faulty stick of ram it is unlikely to damage your laptop, it just wouldn't work.

If you use the Crucial Memory Scanner on their website, it will check your current RAM and suggest ones which are guaranteed compatible.

I've tried cheaper memory before and it hasn't been as reliable (crashes, etc.), so buy the best you can afford - Corsair are my recommendations, but the others mentioned above are also good.
