Can anyone tell me the quickest route between Manchester and Aberdeen please?

quickest route is to fly with BA or BMI, there are no "budget" flights, nor does anyone fly to Aberdeen from Liverpool.

Try the AA routemaster site. I find it is quite good for giving the fastest route - even if it is not the shortest. Enter your starting place and destination and Hey Presto.!

M6 north - A74 Moffatt to Edinburgh - Forth Road Bridge (�1 toll now) M9 to Perth - A90 to Aberdeen.

Man. to Edin - 225 miles. Edin to Ab. 120 miles (near enough -don't get all picky...) The A74 Moffatt route to Edin. is shorter and quicker than the A702 - and prettier.

Alternative is a bit of a longer route to cut across on the M62 to the A1M north. If you have to take this, come off the A1M at Piercebridge just before Scotch Corner on to the A68, and come up through Jedburgh - Jed is 55 miles south of Edin. (with a stack of speed cameras after the border at Carter Bar, so stick to the limit...) Then follow the signs to the FRB and M9 / A9 north.

M6, M/A74,A702,A720,M8,M9,A8000,A/M/A90.
Motorway, dual carriageway and good high-speed roads most of the way except for about 2 miles on the A8000.

I did this journey only a couple of weeks ago and i went
M6 , M74, M73, A 80, M80, A9, A90.
Not bad if you break it up into three. Stop at somewhere on the M74, then Dundee and the last bit is a doddle.

Between Dundee and the M74 the choice of routes is infinite with almost anyone you ask having their personal favourite.
No matter which way you choose there are only minutes in it time-wise.
Total journey length just under 350 miles and shouldn't take more than around 6.5 to 7 hours maximum including breaks.

Don't follow nickmo's instructions (sorry nickmo). The A74 goes nowhere near Edinburgh. Also the A68 leaves the A1 AFTER Scotch Corner but I wouldn't use it unless you want a slow, scenic drive.

Personally I'd head for Glasgow (M6/M74) and then follow the signs for Stirling, Perth etc remembering that you do not actually leave the motorway and go through these towns.
