when i was a kid we always went to the isles of scilly... a couple of hours on the ferry from penzance. we always camped but they have some b&b's and hotels. can go island hopping, take boat trips and loads of walking and pubs tearooms.. beach for the kids and the rig boat racing is great fun to watch.
st mary's is the biggest island but we would always go to one of the smaller ones... depends what youre after really.
I'd say it depends where you live. If you're in the north of Scotland, a driving holiday to France might not be ideal.
Try taking a ferry across to europe, perhaps. Or eurostar maybe.
Hi Chiara,

As an American, your question seems strange to me, as I can think of a thousand places you can go by surface transport. Without knowing your tastes and temperment for exotic places, (and keeping in mind the difficulties of travelling with children), I would recommend renting a holiday camper in France or Italy, charter a sailboat in the Greek Isles (you must pass a sailing certification course for this, but it's quite inexpensive, and fun), or for a really adventurous trip, go by train or ship to St. Petersburg, Russia.
Hi

What about Ireland you could go by boat from Liverpool, Holyhead and Scotland
There are lots of lovely thing to see and do.
Do some work and check out guides of different places on this website and choose what you like the most.
