The reason I say Macao is because you can hop on the ferry into H/K which takes about 30 minutes and avoid the high hotel cost there.
This place is unbelievable, go to their virtual tour. http://www.venetianmacao.com/en/property/index .aspx
You can also have a day trip into China, that will open your kids eyes.
I think people are mixing H/K up with China (Beijing)regarding the pollution, after all the press reports about the Olympics.
Hope this is some help?.

In general I have a dislike of all cities. But I make Singapore the one big exception. Stacks of things to do and sights to visit for a family, lovely people, and totally safe. If your wife drops her purse, it's more than likely some local will pick it up and hand it back to her. Great cheap bus and underground system that makes London Transport look like something from the Middle Ages, and the cheapest taxis you'll ever find. Shopping that will make you wish you'd brought an empty suitcase. Can't recommend it enough.
If you are coming to east than you should come to Incredible India. India is a amazing place.
