Lost Folders And Files Windows 7

Happy New Year Everyone!
I transferred all my folders to my second laptop (via a memory stick) when having a new Windows 7 installed on my other laptop, and many of the folders are now empty. Have I done something utterly stupid - and is there any hope of recovering the information?

Where are they 'empty'? Are they empty folders on your new laptop (and, if so, have you still got them on the USB stick?) or do they simply appear as empty on the USB stick itself? If you've lost files on a USB stick, give the free version of Recuva a try: https://www.piriform.com/recuva
