Just heard on the radio that the Russian Owner has announced they will be closed in March.

The Indy won't of course be the last to go this way.

The i is to be sold.

The owner of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph plan to sell those titles.

The Guardian is cutting its staff to make £50 million savings.

We prefer pixels to paper, and free instead of paying.

Desperately sad about this – especially the crossword. 'Anax' was my first newspaper pseudonym and it's based on my daughter's name, so it's personally important; would hate to lose it.
At the moment it appears the 'I' will continue but as a satellite of a Scottish newspaper which currently has its own 3-setter team. No idea if they'll keep running old Indy stock as they do now, or switch to new crosswords using the existing Indy team, or use their own trio. And it's possible, of course, the current crossword series will continue online.
For now, nobody knows, but our editor will keep us up to date as soon as he hears anything (he said he's usually the last know!).

There is a finite amount of advertising and advertisers are going elsewhere. Newspapers rely on advertising revenue.

There'll be "paper" papers for years to come.

Just maybe fewer of them. The Indy always lagged behind the other main rivals. I always wondered why. New papers seem never to catch on somehow. "Today" came and went. At least the Indy is departing from the newsstands at a time when digital news and technology is well developed.

Well, I enjoy the i on a Saturday, for its crossword but I shan't miss the Indy at all.................its my last choice if I can't find a Guardian but will anybody miss it ?

What you say is actually more true than you might think. For each of the quality dailies, the crossword contributes to its perceived reputation. It's entirely frivolous so shouldn't do that, but somehow it just does.

Now the i newspaper has been taken over by another media group, I don't see how it can continue to be sold in it's present format and at its present great value for money (40p) without the loss-making resources of The Independent, with whom it shares so many reporters and columnists. I, too, really enjoy the cryptic crosswords, and doubt the new version of i will have access to old Independent crosswords as it does now. Too bad for the likes of Quixote (Don Manley) who has been setting for the Independent papers since I first bought The Independent on Sunday when it started many moons ago. And, of course, really bad for the many journalists who will soon be looking for a job. Bad news all round.
