Who was the dead woman thrown from the car? I am guessing it was Helen (who we never met) and the recipient of the cheques is their secret child.

Yes I think her name was Helen Larkin or something similar. The widow wouldn't go to the air raid shelter with everyone, and when her sister (?) found her she said that it was that lady's funeral at that time. I think that's right but it wasn't really very clear.
