You're looking at a distance of about 100-110 miles; think what it would cost you for a taxi from, say, London to Birmingham. A Cypriot taxi will be a bit cheaper than a GB one would be for a comparable distance, but you'll still be facing a stiff fare. If I remember rightly from the noticeboard at Paphos airport (it's a few months since I was there, and it was the small hours of the morning!) the standard fare to Limassol is about 34 CYP - and that's barely halfway. Bear in mind that 1CYP = 1.20 sterling (or more, depending on the exchange rate you can get).
You;re right, clare - the small hours at an airport isn't the best time to be alert and perceptive! It's also easy, because the Cyprus currency unit is called a pound, to think of prices in sterling and forget to add the 20%. I think we're saying the same thing here - Paphos to Protaras is a long way and a taxi isn't going to be cheap.
