The voting of the former Soviet cpuntries is often political. The Ukraine entry was an anti War song at a time when Russia is annexing the Crimea region. In essence, they played for the sympathy vote, and got it in heaps.

Of course the juries of those countries probably did exercise political considerations in their voting (neither gave the others anything) but it was doubtless always thus. It's just that this year we got to know what was what, as the two sets of votes were awarded separately
