Had a friend stay last night and after copious amounts of Cava, we went rushing out through the front door (neither of us could remember why, this morning) and I caught my toe on the door frame and went flying. It hurts a lot, is a bit red and swolen. Could it be broken? It`s not an unusual shape and I can walk but it doesn`t half hurt. Is it possible to sprain/strain a toe?

I sound like an accident prone twit, which I am.

I stumped my toe about 4 months ago getting up for a wee in the middle of the night. It's still red and swollen, I assume broken, but there's not much they can do with toes. The pain has gone and it's slowly healing.
Yes you can sprain a toe, it could also be broken, my son did almost exactly the same thing and his toe was broken even though he could still walk on it.
You need to visit A&E for an X ray.
"Could it be broken?"

Yes.

\\Is it possible to sprain/strain a toe?\\

Yes.

Thanks for the replies. Is there any point in going to A&E though? They can`t do anything for a broken toe. I`m just a bit worried about having to go to work on tuesday night but I don`t want to go sick. Maybe copious amounts of Paracetamol will do it.
. \\\Is there any point in going to A&E though?\\\
No.

I would use Ibuprofen instead of Paracetamol.

So would I sqad but I am temporarily on Citalopram (after my Mum`s death) and you are not supposed to take ssri and nsaids because there is a risk of bleeding. I`m just making some ice in the freezer to put on it. I do have some Naproxen gel so even though thats a nsaid, a little bit might be OK
They told my son there was nothing they could do but at least he knew it was broken and that he had to be extra careful not to hit it again and cause more damage. But I do know someone who had their toe in a plaster cast due to broken bones , that may have been the foot rather than just the toe though.
Ok ^^

I am beginning to think it`s broken. I have immobilized it but still need to get around. It`s going to hurt like hell when I have to put heels on. Ummm - how long did it take for the initial bad pain to go in your case?
About 8 weeks it started to get better. Still swollen but no pain anymore. I was swallowing pain killers at the beginning. Make sure you eat well because if you're anything like me pain killers don't sit well on an empty stomach.
I would get to the hospital and get it checked out, if nothing else they will advise you how to look after it and you will at least know whats wrong with it, they will also be able to immobilise it if required.
Question Author
Thanks Ummm. Ratter, I`ve already immobilized it. If it is fractured, it`s a simple fracture I think.
I'd definitely go to the hospital and get an X ray just so you are sure it is a simple fracture. No point going to your GP he is only going to send you to A&E anyway. The hospital will loan you a pair of crutches if it helps get around, worth it for that alone.
