In minor ways, attempts were in fact made to rig the vote in favour of Remain. Policy measures to be introduced by Juncker were postponed and the pathetic outcome of Cameron`s renegotiations (in which he achieved absolutely nothing) was not shown to have resulted in no binding undertakings from the European Commission - something only to be revealed after a Remain vote.
As regards nostalgia and the 1950s, absolutely noone I have come across or read about on the Brexit side was the least bit interested in such things. They did, however, recognise the the EU is intensely bureaucratic, corrupt and undemocratic and that continuing membership would be like being shackled to a corpse.
