9 days ago I did the usual stupid thing for me - I fell over onto rocks on a waterfall in Grenada. I don`t have a bruise on my knee and I can walk OK but when I kneel down to do something my knee hurts like I only damaged it yesterday. Could I have done something nasty? Can kneecaps split/become damaged etc?

You might have spurs, which is very painful.
The bruise might come out yet. I often knocked my knees and elbows (and other places) and no bruises appear but they are painful to lean on.

Extremely unlikely.

Yes, they can be fractured, dislocated and have ligamentous tears, but in your case it is again, extremely unlikely as you can walk without pain.

That is a possibility, but unlikely. The likeliest cause of your problem would seem to be a pre-patella bursitis (Housemaid's knee) and providing it doesn't become infected (red, painful swelling) it should settle without further treatment.

Thanks for the replies. Thanks sqad - it did feel quite hot to the touch for several days but has cooled down now.
