I thought birds used nesting boxes only when they're laying eggs. I put up some new nesting boxes a few months ago and I can see blue tits going in and out. Do they use boxes in the winter?

Yes, they do, Thugulike. They use the boxes as winter roosting places.

That makes sense. I can see one box from my study window which is lovely to watch. I have another box which I haven't put up yet. Must get a move on if they're going to use them. Thank you Tilly2
The robins appreciate an open fronted box as well, Tul.
As well as a roost, I think they will also be checking out nest box's as a potential nesting site for later on.
I counted 17 blue tits emerging from one of our larger bird boxes. They obviously like the warmth of the crowd.
They also check out the smaller boxes for spiders and earwigs etc.
