after considering your question, I have a different perspective in this. if we talk about in terms of speed of transmission of data, optic cable is the best option we got, but it's not best in every case. these wires are way more costly to be installed in households. These wires are mostly used by corporates as it carries higher installation and maintenance cost. Moreover, its do high with the speed that we need a tool to control the speed down of the cable and to prevent saturation of data transferred, we call it fiber-optic attenuator. let's say if you want an internet connection then you must go with cat 5 cable and not fiber optic cable, it might cost you 10x your internet fees.
