Has anyone figured out how to do this puzzle?

Don't you need the title or the lyrics to begin?

I am finding it hard to solve across clues. Have not looked at down clues yet.

Thanks.

hi Gregsdad, welcome to this discussion.

Can you give an example why you think two letters have to be added to the Across answers?

13a is Imposer. There are 8 cells in the grid. So only one letter is available to be added.
Answer to 18a is 5 letters. Grid has 6 cells.
Same thing with 35a. 4 letter answer, 5 cells in the grid.

Hankir, the s in 13A changes to rt, giving importer, the n in 18A changes to mo and the s in 35A changes to rt

Gregsdad, thanks.
That is a complication that never occurred to me.
I see that in your examples, a letter before and after are used to replace a letter. For ex: S replaced by R and T.
It could be a good hint to find the title.
I have no idea what the title could be that suggests such a replacement.

It also means that some letters such as A, Z, I and K(will bring in J), or P and R (will bring in Q) are less likely to be replaced.
Hi Hankir, I have the title, it's three words, 4,5,3.... I eventually managed to get the songwriter through the down clues in which a letter moves within the clue, so it then makes sense.
hankir ... i have fleece for 6d...but how does the clue work ...LE for most of leg inside ??
If you move r from 'Furry' to 'staying', the clue will make sense
Thanks Gregsdad...completely on the wrong track before

I know nothing about the music so any hint on the song will be welcome.
Hints on these two please:
Across answers are one letter less than the number in paran.
16A Small change in Rio before continued cover of Olympics (7)

Down answers, a letter moves and creates a new word
19D Old dance making you grin after beginning to amuse once before (7) I can think of "your gin: but cannot solve it. It begins with M.

19 D This involves taking an 'a' in the clue and moving it elsewhere in the clue. The answer is a dance, which usually has a different spelling.
16 A. A four letter abbreviation followed by the outside letters of Olympics gives the definition - small change/money once in Brazil.

Thanks NAC.
Hi Hankir, the song is by a female singer/songwriter, probably more famous for a song about 'paving paradise'....really difficult to say more without giving her name !
Question Author
Thanks Gregsdad.
Good hint.
I know the name but have never heard this song or any song of this person.
Something tells me that I will play this song some time today.

Now that I have the extra letters and the answer to some, still cannot figure out where to place the letter. 9D has J moving but where?
The J goes to An, giving Jan(January) as the present is for then.

Thanks NAC.
It is a new year gift.
Glad I could help, Hankir.
I've saved the paper for two weeks and gone through the answers. Never usually understand how it all works. Basic cryptics are often hard enough but the inquisitor is just baffling! I now avoid, which is a shame.
