You see with this awards thing ,knighthoods ,damehood and others .Do people have to address the knighted and damed Sir and Dame when talking to them .oh aye do the obes cbes have to have that put to them name when chatting to them . Hope not I would forget ..won’t end up in tower will I ?

the father of an old boyfriend turned down a knighthood many years ago...he was a big wig in education...by politely saying "thank you, but my wife is already a lady ".. he was very political though sothat may be why...

A lot insist on it as they perceive they have worked so hard to get it - erm others insist THEY have worked hard for Sir X's honour.

Sir Mick's nickname is Tight-wad as he reportedly never pays or paid for anything. I dont think it is Sir Tightwad

Lord Melvyn Barg - novelist and luvvy was referred to as FRS but I dont think he can be ( COmpanion of honour )
Clare Marx President of the surgeons did - apparently you have to work for one or "deserve" it so god knows what act of betrayal she is guilty of.

Turning down a knighthood ( see above) is pretty uncommon
There are lists of refuses - and it much more common to think you deserve a honor or knighthood than be offered one and say "no thanks"

I remember a case, not so many years ago, of a headmistress who was made a dame. A few years later it emerged that not only was she a bully who terrorised her staff, but also that she was convicted of fraud, having used the school credit card to fund her lavish lifestyle. She was stripped of her damehood.

why do people accept knighthoods and then insist they don't want anyone to use the title? Sounds a big humbuggish to me. If you don't want people calling you Sir, turn down the offer.
