Mine never sprouts new shoots from the base so just grows higher and higher. Does anyone think that in th Autumn it would survive being off at aboyt 10cm and see if it sprouts from lower down?

Yes, I think you're right.
The nursery trade often run shears over tops to form bushier plants

Just to add, they are actually short-lived perennials from warmer climes but are usually treated as annuals in the UK.

I chop mine right down and they bush. But living in Bournemouth we have a micro climate that is mild enough for them to survive.

Where do you keep your Anthurium? Maybe it is struggling upwards towards the light source.

Thanks for all replies. It's kept in the warmest, lightest but shady place my flat allows. I shall cut it in October and hope! But I've already bought a replacement in case all fails.
