Sciatic Pain

My oh stumbled off the pavement recently and the next day started getting the most awful pain, in his hip and down his left leg, the Doctor gave him co-dydramol which is not working, I wonder if anyone out there can suggest anything that we could get from the chemist that would help till we can see the Doctor again.

Was he given an x-ray? If the co-dydramol is not working there may be something else wrong.

Tesco Long Lasting Pain Relief. 200 mg modified release capsules Ibuprofen.

Ask for an injection in the buttock it helps but it doesn't last, I have just got rid of it after 5 weeks of hell. Sqad (who is in hospital, I believe) forecast 6 weeks
I was taking 1,800mg of Ibuprofen per day, but even that barely helped. Diclofenac may help, but I can't use it because of bad side effects.

Margaret has a point - at 81 pain like that after a stumble deserves an X Ray I feel.

I used to get sciatica...and oh it hurt! Swimming was the answer for me. No need for loads of drugs I found, swimming sorted it out!

If the application of a gel can remove the pain in a minute, I don't think you have sciatica, certainly not what I'm talking about.
This is pain so intensely & chronic from which there is no escape 24/7.

The only thing I can personally compare it to was that I once had a fiendish toothache for a weekend, this is that level of pain extended to deep in the buttock & all down the leg.
I pray it never returns & I sympathise with the person in the OP.

Khandro, I have acute sciatica rather than the chronic type. It only "acts" up, fortunately, maybe three times a year and is on and off for a period of about a week, and you are correct, it is very painful. Anyway, I apply this oil to the hip area every time I get the pain and it's gone really quickly...It works for me every time.

thank you all, no there was no exray , I mentioned my fear that there might be a fracture but was told the symptoms are typical of sciatica,but he was examined well enough I think to rule out a break or a slipped disc , he is now taking Co-Codamol which seems to be helping a bit, we also got one of those freeze sprays like the footballers use, but still think he has to wait it out.

Some years back, my holiday was completely ruined by, as I found out later, sciatica. Excruciating pain day in day out for the whole week. Went to see my GP on my return who confirmed it was sciatica. His advice was painkillers and time. I could have gone to physio but he felt this wouldn't be of great benefit. Time proved to be the healer although it took about 4 weeks. Your OH has my sympathy.

It is dreadful pain and can be all consuming, hope it soon settles.
