Fruit Trees Growing On Our Streets. Birds And Bees Encouraged.

Every house to have access to a fruit tree. Two million trees could be planted on the streets of towns and cities under Boris Johnson's plan to brighten up Britain. New houses should be fitted with special bricks to encourage birds and bees to settle in urban areas.

Oh dear, how upsetting this has become. Swallows return to the same nest every year - destroy the nest and they will not settle. We had them in France. They have enough problems surviving the Sarah and the olive harvest in the Med. countries (Greece excepted). What selfish minds to put a bit of bird-muck ahead of the survival of such a welcome visitor. They have noticeably declined in the last 5 years and B.B. etc. have contributed to this. Very cross and disbelieving about some attitudes.

Thank you for your post Jourdain, I just don't understand that mindset at all. I hope there are not many more with the same attitude as our birds need all the help they can get for their survival.

He seems to have gone quiet. All intelligent people know of the epic, miraculous journey these astonishing birds make from South Africa to us each year, so I won't repeat it in detail, but did you know that swallow chicks, unlike most other birds, cannot survive without food for more than 24 hours. In rainy UK summer weather when there are no flying insects, it has been discovered by the addition of tracking devices, that the parent birds will cross the channel & go as far as Holland to return within that 24 hr time with a mouthful of insects to feed their young.

Thank you, amazing, and No I didn't know that Khandro.
I find the fact that baby Swifts, having left the nest for the first time, only land again when they nest to breed. As, typically, they don't breed until they're four years' old that means that a juvenile bird leaving the nest for the first time in mid-summer, may stay airborne until the spring nearly four years later. How amazing is that.
