very thick on GK quizzes yet they are always clever when they appear on Countdown. Are most selected for being thick yet Countdown only select clever people

Countdown standards seem to accept anyone, but to be a high scorer you need to have a good vocabulary, have a keen eye, analytical mind, and be able to do sums. Whereas general knowledge requires a good memory for all sorts of useless info. Different skills.

Countdown does indeed require a specific set of skills, namely the ability to create words from letters, and work out maths sums.

I would be useless at both, but my general knowledge is reasonable, so I would actually appear reasonably bright on something like The Chase, but thick as a timber yard on Countdown.

He hates that the fact that the second group are actually proud of not knowing things - and you (and I) can entirely see where he is coming from.

We have two local radio presenters who have the 'I don't know anything, I'm a thick Stokie, me ...' persona, and I never listen to them for that exact reason.
