If there any young earth creationists here, I'd be interested to hear why you hold that view. I'm not looking for a squabble, just seeking to understand where you are coming from.
Naomi says "It’s quite interesting that Theland uses Answers in Genesis to support his claims, and yet part of their ‘evidence’ for a young earth is based on the fact that Carbon Dating is ineffective on samples claimed to be billions of years old."
I can't see Theland making any claims on this thread, or quoting Genesis. And also making no reference to carbon dating. Are you referring to a different thread, Naomi?
It appears from reading the answers that there are no "young earth creationists" who have responded to the thread. From the little I understand of "young earth" creationists, Seventh Day Adventists are the only "mainstream" group who seem to believe it, after it was promoted by George McCready Price.
Stableford, Theland mentioned carbon dating in the first post on this thread - and no, he hasn’t quoted Genesis - but he does post links to an American Christian apologist organisation that enthusiastically champions the Young Earth theory. That organisation is called ‘Answers in Genesis’, which is what I referred to.
//and if God created man out of the dust who’s to say that within the dust wasn’t a tiny omoeba that subsequently divided and divided Zillions of times to
Make man etc etc//
Or indeed, give one individual snake vocal chords!
(Oh, and a donkey a few centuries later...the Bible's very own Mr Ed!)
And then the evangelicals get hung up on discussing the 'science' of the Bible and quote answersingenesis as 'proof'....
Greek mythology adequately explains lightening.
It was Zeus's thunderbolt. No need for science to get involved, it was explained thousands of years ago.
Nailit, sorry- are you saying pentecostals believe in the young earth theory- ie that the earth itself is only 6000 or so years old? Or do they not believe like many evangelical groups that it's humans etc that havent been around longer than 6000 years?
Thanks Nailit. In answer to Atheist's question, I believe that the earth was formed by God over the course of billions of years. I see no conflict between that and the Bible narrative which describes our current creation and God's dealings with man. I believe He created men in 6 literal days as described in Genesis. I studied geology at a basic level and I think anyone would be hard-pressed to say the actual earth, ie the mountains etc, were formed in anything less than many millions of years. But that's only my personal belief.
Stapleford, the bible tells us that God wasn't alone when he created the universe, and he that created two different types of man - the first possibly a race, the second, Adam. See Genesis 1, 2 and 3.
