fruit diet

Does anybody think that doing a fruit diet for about 2 weeks would be a good thing, as I need to lose a couple of stone, I've cut out alcohol, and drink plenty of water.

Any diet that isn't balanced (ie: is based on one food category only) may make you lose weight fast, but as soon as you stop doing it, you will put it - and more- back on. Also, you will lack a lot of nutrients (in this case, mainly proteins I assume). Is this "fruit diet" based on fruits only?
Your body is designed to store fat, it's a survival instinct. If you starve yourself, the body will go into emergency mode and store as much fat from whatever you eat as it can. Which means that once you start to eat normally again, your body will store up more fat from your food than it would have if you hadn't starved, hence putting the weight back on after a "fad" diet, and even more than you originally lost. I hope this makes sense.....:-)
The only way to lose weight safely, and durably, is to eat sensibly: plenty of fruit and veg, avoid saturated fats but do not cut out fats completely, drink plenty of water, and exercise more. Cutting out alcohol is a great step!
I wish you all the best!

That was a good answer. Like you, I have to lose weight, so for the last month or so I have been eating cereals in place of a meal, plenty of fruit, walking (it's part of my job so that helps) and not snacking. Every now and then I go mad though and have a proper meal, such as fish and chips (home cooked), burgers (done in the oven tho) chicken, pork and a takeaway. It's coming off slowly but surely.
The above answers are excellent! I did try going on a fruit diet many years ago and it made me very ill indeed. I developed a lot of pain in my stomach and terrible acidic stomach. Without going into too much detail, let me just say that going to the loo became a nightmare. Far too much acid in the body from all that fruit. I ended up feeling so ill I was vomiting every day. Yes, I did lose a fair amount of weight, but that was mostly from being sick all the time. I gained more weight than I had lost within two weeks of going back to healthy food. My skin also suffered from eating so much fruit. So please, if you have to diet at all, just eat sensibly. Just eat less than you usually do, exercise if you can, go for plenty of walks, drink lots of water and stay away from too much fat, alcohol and sugar. Better yet, see a nutritionist and get good advice. It doesn't cost that much and you will feel all the better for it! Best wishes.
I have very occasionally tried a "fruit only" diet for two days, as a detox. I have to say that I did lose a little weight, but my bowels paid the price and I would certainly not recommend it for any longer. I am sure you would suffer from a lot of unpleasant side effects. You do need protein and fibre as well.
Microwaved porridge containing fruit is an excellent way to start the day and eating fruit as a dessert or snack is fine, but including all the other desirable elements in your diet will ensure that you feel better and are not so inclined to give up your weight loss programme because you are feeling unwell from it.
