much debate in the media about schools and their reopening over the last few days - with the government suggesting children are not super spreaders, countered by Neil Ferguson saying that they are. and along with suggestions by the Association of Schools and College Leaders that children could only attend on a rota basis, is the NEU's 200 point checklist to be satisfied before schools should reopen.

Open schools and get parents back to work. Easy enough to say in theory but what about the practical aspects. A lot of parents depend on - child minders, after school clubs and grandparents. Staggering the school hours will mean a lot of flexibility on all of those people. One of my grandsons attends a school with about 1500 pupils. Before the virus they were already operating a staggered time table for class times,lunch breaks and home- times. I am not against schools re-opening just trying to point out some of the difficulties that will have to be addressed.
Whatever all these alleged problems are, the brutal truth is that the government - this one or any other - cannot prevent people contracting infectious diseases. The sooner people realise that and move on the sooner life we return to something resembling normality. A young relative of mine showed me some of the comments on Twitter and Facebook yesterday and the level of ignorance and paranoia displayed by some is truly shocking. If this drivel really is driving the government's strategy they need booting out forthwith.
The daily level of new infections, even though it has risen in recent days, is still staggeringly low. A thousand people in a population of some 66m is one person in every 66,000. For the vast majority of those new infectees the results will be either no symptoms at all or very minor inconveniences. And to deal with that "threat" the country has been virtually brought to its economic knees. It is absolutely shocking that such measures have been taken which are seriously affecting people's lives and anybody who believes this must go on "to keep us all safe" is deluded. I don't expect a government to keep me safe from infectious diseases and I don't want them to. People need to get a grip and stop posting hysterical nonsense on social media.

Just heard a parent on 5 live getting very wound up about sending her child back. She used words like 'terrifying'. She kept saying we need a plan B but didn't provide details. She referred to the PM as being like Peter Pan throughout all this- not sure what that meant. I think she felt all children should have full PPE from when they leave the front door to getting home.

Indeed. Her comments are typical of the trash and drivel I was shown at the weekend. Frankly people like this are demented. They either need to be educated as to the way things are or ignored. The woman's children should return to school in September, no ifs, no buts.

I'm very strongly on the 'everyone back to school and, therefore, work in September school of thought. The argument has been made very strongly by NJ & JD and others.
My next-door neighbour, however, has 2 autistic sons. 1 is mildly so and the other (aged 5) is severe and has to wear headphones to cut out extraneous noise etc., etc.. The younger could have kept his routine going and been in our village school (no cases there in all this time). Mum was too scared to send him. Result: small child screams and throws tantrums all day, so he will go nuts when sent back to school in Sept.. It is trying on us to hear the noise, but his dad is on the verge of walking out. Worse, the older boy (7), who would have been OK had his mum been able to do a bit of home education with him, has had zilch input from what I can gather (young one dominates) so will have lost ground hugely. He's a quiet kid and I am afraid that he will just regard inability to keep up as failure and give up.
Sorry for that divergence, I feel strongly about it. All parents should be informed that normal rules apply and if school is missed then the usual fines will be applied.
Staff should be reminded that their contracts are to teach in term-time. This has a long history to when I began teaching and teachers were paid only for the weeks they worked (leaving them free to work in the holiday periods). It was deemed convenient for the total sum to be divided into monthly payments and of course now everyone thinks we are paid for the holidays. Our contracts, however, historically understand that we will teach during term-time. Teachers will be in breach of contract if they fail to do so. Aged and vulnerable staff should, of course be considered as separate cases and arrangements made.

This Schools are already opened. The Foundation does not exist to add one more school to the prevailing myriad. It exists to transform the way our future citizens are developed. Since the time of our founding in 2009, we have made every moment count towards building a strong foundation for children at all of our schools. The great progress made by our students, and the positive feedback from their parents has made our existence worthwhile.
