I just went to my local shop and the person who served me was called Deepinderdeep. It's a good job his name wasn't Deepinderchit or I think I would have just lost it completely.

Whoops, Rowan! If I had the time I would probably have an alter ego too. I did one night, many years ago, appear as Rick O'Shea but I'm that clumsy I outed myself in about 10 minutes and poor old Rick was consigned to room 101. Oh well.

When I was a boy in the 1950s there were many local shops and it was common for the name of the shopkeeper to be written on the shop. There was a cobbler's shop with the name written in script above the shop and I could never decide whether it was J Cheetham or I Cheetham; I hoped it was the latter.
