At one time it seemed every other house had a small bird in a cage.  I used to keep budgies and cockatiels but the asthma put paid to that.

I don't know anyone that has a budgie or canary now.  My mother got great comfort from her feathered companions.

Like you, not known anyone for  years.  When I was a child both my great grandparents and grandparents kept them. I can also remember my dad sitting nursing a sickly fledgling with a mini hot water bottle.

No, I used to breed budgies, canaries, parrotlets and lovebirds but no we have cats the budgies etc don't get a look in.

I wonder why they fell out of favour

I think keeping a bird in a small cage indoors is cruel.  So many were left on their own all day while owner was out at work.  In an aviary with other birds, better.

A long time ago I was on holiday with one of my sons and we stayed in a hotel where a bird was kept in a small cage in a room nobody used probably because it didn't have a window.  We asked if we could go in and the owners agreed.  The bird was happy so to have us pay it lots of attention for a week of its lonely life.  Sorry can't remember what type of bird it was, either a budgie or a canary definitely.  Gawd knows why they even had the bird.

Maybe because they didn't have a carbon monoxide detector.

Tut Douglas, I feel awful now because I just laughed;-)

In those circumstances keeping a caged bird can be cruel but mine and my mother's were rarely alone and spent a lot of time out of the cage most days.

Not now as have a cat.

Had them when I was a child. Dad bred budgies in an outdoor aviary. We had one in the house but she was more often out of the cage than in. She used to walk about the tea table and remove the spoons from saucers and drop them over the edge of table.

All of our birds loved to play football with a little plastic ball, chasing it up and down the carpet.  Spent a lot of time on my hands and knees getting the ball out from under the sofa.

Ruined my living room door, pecking the top, it was a favourite perch.

We got ours when he was very young and he grew up fearless. Just as well we had a tolerant dog.

Talking of perches. All our pictures had budgie poo down the back where she used to perch.

Lots of memories coming back!

Lovely photo, bhg.  Thank you

Love the photo, bhg.

Sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky. Must go out and do some pruning.

Question Author

Bits of wallpaper pecked off too, Gill?

That's just gorgeous bhg, thanks

Question Author

It's mizzly here, not a bit of sun or blue sky.  No pruning for me

Yes, Barry.

She used to sit on my head and climb down my plaits.

😀

Mizzle here for a couple of days so must make the most of the sun. Off to wield the secateurs before sun goes in.

I don't like it when their relatives use my car and windows for target practice so am unlikely to give any free rein to demonstrate their incontinence close up.
