Have the rules/procedure changed?  The last time I ordered a copy of a death certifate online I input the details and waited. I got a reply by email stating they had found the relevant death certificate and to pay the fee if I wanted a copy.

This time they are asking for payment first.  It's not that long ago since I last ordered a copy, a matter of weeks, both for England.

Is it for the same death certificate?

I'm asking because each council/office may have different practices.

No, it's a different person and I went through the same gov.uk website.

Perhaps they've started ensuring a charge to cover searching ?

Question Author

No charge for searching if you go in person. It doesn't take long, especially if the death occurred within the last 20 years and the full name, age, place of death and year is known

Yeah, but you know how much commercial companies cost any time spent doing something for you. It simply occurred to me that they msy have wanted money up front to ensure you actually bought the certificate.

I've bought bmd certs in the past for genealogy reasons, but stopped that as soon as the PO started charging on size rather than weight; and the GRO responded by starting folding my precious certificates in order to send them.

were they in different time periods?

I have always paid up front ( + if we cant find it/ it  is not there, then we keep the loo-loo)

Question Author

Both within the last two years
