home made Christmas decorations

I once made some homemade Xmas decs by soaking thin slices of fresh orange or it was perhaps whole clemantines or satsumas in a strong sugar solution and drying them out, but I cannot remember the details!! I know they needed to be started some time in advance of the festive season-ie now. Can anyone remind me how to make these and/or any other ideas for "natural" style Christmas decorations?

We used to slice oranges and put them in the oven at the lowest setting for ages (until they were dried out) and then hung them with string or put them in a basket

Also we used to collect pine cones and spray paint them silver
