Why are horse shoes meant to be lucky?? And when you hang one above your front door, is it meant to be upside down?

when i was little my mum said hold or place a horse shoe like a cup and this is where your luck lies. don't tip it up or your luck will run out.
my daughter has just begun uni and she has a silver horse shoe on her desk.
