If you click here, the link will take you to a web-page with lots of condolences ideas that people sent someone on the death of his wife. Perhaps they will give you some ideas.
I would certainly advise you, however, to personalise any message in some way...perhaps by referring to something meaningful in the relationship between you and the couple concerned...a happy occasion shared in the past or whetever. Good luck.

From a friend's wife's funeral order of service, I don't know its full origin, but I think it's wonderful.
Miss Me, But Let Me Go
When I come to rest at the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remeber the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
It's all part of a master plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know.
Laugh at all the things we used to do
Miss me, but let me go.

say what you feel,
make it a bit formulaic, because oherwise the bereaved party will wonder why you have not come out with the usual guff and then conclude that There is Something Wrong.
I try to include death or died somewhere in the message and remember that their grief is personal so you DONT know what it is like.
