My friend has a problem with her Peugeot 206 (W-reg, 1.4l, around 53000 miles).

While driving along she has noticed that it is losing power so when the accellerator is pressed there is little or no response and then while slowing down the engine cuts out. The car must be stopped and then restarted. This is happening a few times each day.

Once it is restarted half the time it comes back fine but the rest of the time it will come back on at high revs, around 3000rpm, and does not reduce unless the ignition is turned off and back on again.

A Peugeot dealer has carried out a diagnostic inspection but does not know what the problem could be. They have apparantly advised that the only option would be for them to take apart the whole engine and rebuild it again.

Has anybody ever experienced this before and, if so, do you know what it might be?

my wife had a similar problem with a Citroen Saxo which shares many parts with your car.
In her case it was damp getting into the electrics and a spray of WD40 over the spark plug leads and distributor cap solved it. (Citroen replaced many parts with no result.)
Ignore the dealer and try a good independant garage, they talk more sense and are not so profit-minded.
Any help?

That's a great suggestion, thank you.
This is more likely to be an engine management problem than an engine fault. Citroen, Renault and Peugeot have a variety of ECU problems that they seem unable to diagnose. I know of a Picasso that was exchanged for a new one at 6 months old because the dealers couldnt fix it. This was then sold by another Citroen dealer 250 miles away and the new owner had the same problems.
