At the moment I have Norton because it was already loaded on the computer when new. I have read that the free Antivirus programs are very good and because I do no banking and using my computer in retirement mainly for emails and info - I do buy a little on line - I am thinking of downloading either AVG or Avast. Can anyone recommend or not on these two programs. Thanks.

Norton is a nightmare.

I use Avast antivirus with Comodo Firewall, also free.

I also regularly run Spybot and AdAware, both free.

Thanks Ethel I think I will do the same as you as you seem quite satisfied with it.
i have just finished a 90 day trial of "windows onecare live" and it is brilliant. i now have it for 37 per year and it is worth every penny !!!
I'd recommend AVG, and I work for an ISP that has no loyalty to the product. Before you uninstall Norton you need to temper its enthusiasm, by turning it down, otherwise you just remove the handles. Norton is an evil machine who's employees are encouraged, if you were to ring them, to tell you that you must pay more money to have viruses removed and even more to have files condensed otherwise the universe will implode and it will be your fault. At least that is what they put over. They rate people on their address. If it sounds posh, they'll charge you more. Or if you sound like you don't understand computers; they'll charge you more. I have little doubt that artificial intellingence, one day, will take over the world - Believe me, someone/thing from Norton will be in charge.

Thanks Birdcatcher it looks like AVG and Avast seem genuine companies. Will do a little more research, not looking forward to uninstalling Norton.
Another vote for Avast from me too. I have it on two machines and it is fine. When I first installed it, it found several trojans that Mcafee had let through.

Avast scored above McAfee and AVG and Live Care was seriously flawed
