US states

I have been asked what was the 56th state in the US which was given statehood in 1959 but I can only find 50 sates in my book. Can anyone else help? Thanks

Aolaska (number 49) and Hawaii (50) joined in 1959; that's the lot

I expect someone's handwriting was so bad somewhere along the line, and someone misread 50 as 56 !

Thanks, good answers. Your answers agrees with mine- Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. Maybe it was bad handwriting or maybe it's a trick question- perhaps there was a book, film or TV show about a 56th state. Thanks.
