It is obvious from some of the unintelligent and foul language in some of the answers here, they are from some of the younger generation. Those who have been weaned on Sex, Drugs and Violence, is it any wonder such genteel TV programmes such as Last of the Summer Wine don't appeal to them?
Indeed vehelpfulguy - there is actually only one script and they have a bag with all the character names in it, another bag with some sort of vehicle or house hold item and then a third bag with places to land.
The then draw out a character name out, a vehicle and a landing place and this forms the back bone of the show, therefore it normally ends up with Compo (yes I know he died about 10 years ago) rolling down a hill in a bath and ending up in some lake.
I have all the early episodes - it is good to see Michael Bates again. And it does portray social history too. The earlier series showed the majority of male characters smoking whereas nobody smokes in it now.
