You can use the services of a registered travel agent:

or you can apply in person at the High Commission in London (as well as the Consulates in Birmingham or Edinburgh):

Visas must be obtained prior to travel. India does not operate a 'visa on arrival' system.

you could try getting one away from London, or have someone else get it for you (for a fee)

we were due to fly on a friday (i believe) last november, the sunday before i started getting things together for my case and reading up on timings etc, only to read that we HAD to have a visa in advance. to cut a long story short we had to dash to london (2hrs by train) queue for hours at embassy to get it in person. i dread to think of the total cost to us of the visa-its about 30 per person for the actual visa.a lesson learnt! i always read ALL the small print now!
getting it yourself in person in London can be a nightmare, firstly check that the day you go is not a public holiday in India because they will be closed.
I have over the years queued almost all day, but this year in May, midweek [Monday is not a good day] I was in and out with my visa in 3 hours much to my amazement.
It is worth paying an agency to do it for you.
Just as well they have stopped the postal visas, I saw an 80yr old man get the run round and he had sent by registered post 6 weeks before and they were so rude and unhelpful and he was flying the next day and they had lost his passport. Friends of mine sent theirs by post and a third passport came back with theirs, they returnred it to the owner but no doubt the embassy would have denied all knowledge, they seem to work in complete chaos there.
