Difficult to say - other than that drink driving does not appear to be a particularly heinous crime in the US so probably would be discounted. Whether they are any stricter with J1 visas than tourist ones I don't know - it would not normally be grounds to refuse a tourist visa.

If I were you I'd get a 'friend' to call Camp America and ask for their opinion/advice...
i live in scotland, and due to having drink driving conviction, on june 2007, i had to travel to the american embassy in belfast for a tourist visa interview, i was told by the officer at the embassy that i now need to go to london and pay a further 200 + vat, to have blood test done to prove i do not have a serious drink problem. i was also told that london is the only place in the u,k that hold these medicals, as it is a doctor who is designated by the u.s embassy, all in all the whole thing is not cheap, on touching 1,000 and still not guaranteed, and i may add that if you have any other medical conditions you will be advised by this doctor to see a further doctor which will be further charged.
