Daft question but does your computer have a DVD drive or is it just a CD drive? It should say DVD on it if it's a DVD drive.
You say "one of those free DVDs" but what do you mean?

Is it s DVD film free with a newspaper?

If not what sort of DVD is it?

Have you got a DVD player connected to your TV you could try it on.

If it works on that and not on your PC then squarebear may be right, it may be your PC only works with CDs and not with DVDs

Windows is missing the software codecs to play dvds, go to www.download.com and install any dvd playback software, then use Windows media player to watch films.

I'm with mattie - but niel is right ... always be careful where and what you download

http://www.free-codecs.com/
has been a respected site for years now

you can d/l many different codecs
(look at real player alternative and quicktime alternative also)

the package you want is the K-lite mega codec pack
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Meg a_Codec_Pack.htm
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pa ck_d5230.html

it also comes with a solid (but basic) player
