My potterton boiler has stopped working. I had turned it on and heard a sizzling noise and then all power has gone.I called a engineer and he said it was the "CIRCUIT BOARD?" When i asked him the cost he stated that it would be between 100-350. I know nothing of this man and am concerned about his methods. He charged me 50 for his call out which i dont mind but i have had no heating or water for a week now. Any advice??

I do know there have been problems with circuit boards on some models of Potterton boilers it was featured on BBC Watchdog some months ago. Try google search on it 100 to 350 sounds a bit vague an experienced engineer should be able to give a pretty firm price I would think
circuit boards are pretty expensive and an average price for a replacement one and fitting is around 200.
which model of potterton boiler do you have? there is one particular model that you cannot just buy the circuit board, you have to buy the complete control box and then you are looking at around 300.
your best bet is to ring potterton themselves. they offer a service where for 225 they guarantee to repair the boiler and it includes all parts and all labour. in your case this really would be a good deal. when you ring them you have to pay the 225 in advance on your credit or debit card and they then arrange a time to call, the only down side is they only guarantee to call sometime between 8 and 6 i think it is so you have to wait in all day.
please let me know how you get on and what the problem was as i'm a recently qualified heating engineer and its all good experience for me.
p.s. if your in the birmingham area my old man whos also my boss can fix it but potterton are still your best bet.
Hi, I was recently qouted 180 for a new circuit board, that was a family friend who has done work for me before - not sure of the circumstances of your problem, but hope that helps..
another thing you have to watch out for is that sometimes its another component at fault which causes the board to blow, so you change the board and then that one blows too.
